BRIDGWATER - HOMBERG LINK-SOCIETY

Bridgwater bestrides the River Parrett at the heart of Sedgemoor in the County of Somerset. Its origins pre-date the Norman conquest of 1066 and has at times played a prominent and chequered part in the history of this Country.

It is the birthplace of Robert Blake, General at Sea, and in the vicinity, at Westonzoyland, was fought the last battle on English soil between troops of James II and the Pretender, the Duke of Monmouth.

The town is a busy market town and has a population of nearly 40,000 people. It has changed considerably over recent years, losing a substantial manufacturing base, to be replaced by light industry and as a major center for logistics. Gerber Juice is a big employer, as are new factories connected to the Dairy Industry . Major employment opportunities thus generated, as will the proposed building of two nuclear electricity generating plants in the near vicinity.

Bridgwater is the administrative center for the Sedgemoor District. It is ideally located within some of the most beautiful scenery in the Country, and enjoys easy access to the M4 motorway leading to the South West, Wales, the Midlands and London.

The Bridgwater-Homberg/Efze Link Society was established in 1992 The Society meets on a monthly basis, and endeavours to develop and nurture relations between the two communities, in liaison with the Deutsche-Englische Partnerschaft Verein in Homberg/Efze.

Regular exchange visits take place between schoolchildren of the two towns, as with members of the two Town Societies, The Sedgemoor Rotary enjoys bi-annual exchanges with the Homberg/Efze Rotary Club, Bursaries are available (from the Town Twinning Society and Sedgemoor Rotary Club) for young people wishing to undertake foreign work experience for limited periods in Homberg/Efze.

Homberg/Efze is the administrative center for Schwalm-Eder-Kreis. It has a population of about 15000 and is a beautiful early medieval town with over 400 houses dating back to 17th and 18th. Century surrounding the town square.

Bridgwater liegt beiderseits des Flusses Parrett im Herzen von Sedgemoor in der Grafschaft Somerset.Bridgwaters Gruendung datiert noch vor der Normannischen Eroberung im Jahre 1066. Die Stadt hat zeitweilig eine prominente und bewegte Rolle im Land gespielt.

Sie ist als Geburtsort von General zur See Admiral Robert Blake bekannt. Hier fand auch die letzte Schlacht auf englischem Boden statt, die “Battle of Sedgemoor.”

Die Stadt ist eine geschaeftige Marktstadt und hat fast 40 000 Einwohner.Sie hat sich im Laufe der Zeit stark veraendert. Die Herstellungsindustrie wurde durch Leichtindustrie und durch ein Zentrum fuer Logistics ersetzt.Ein grosser Arbeitgeber ist “Gerber Juice”.

Bridgwater, eingebettet in einer der schoensten und lieblichsten Gegenden im ganzen Land, ist das Verwaltungszentrum fuer den Bezirk Sedgemoor und ideal gelegen mit Zugang zur M5 Autobahn, die in den Suedwesten, die Midlands, Wales und nach London fuehrt.

Die Partnerschaft mit Homberg/.Efze im Landkreis Schwalm-Eder besteht seit November 1992.Die Bridgwater-Homberg-Link Society trifft einmal pro Monat zusammen und bemueht sich um die Weiterentwicklung der Verbindung beider Staedte.

Sie arbeitet eng mit dem Deutsch-Englischen Partnerschaftsverein in Homberg/Efze zusammen.

Regelmaessige Austauschbesuche zwischen Schulkindern beider Staedte und zwischen Mitgliedern beider Vereine finden statt.Der Rotarierclub Sedgemoor und der von Homberg/Efze erfreuen sich alle zwei Jahre an einem Austausch.

Stipendien werden von den Stadtpartnerschaftsvereinen und den Rotarierclubs gewaehrt. Diese sollen jungen Menschen helfen, die Arbeitserfahrung in den beiden Laendern suchen.

Homberg/Efze ist das Verwaltungszentrum von Schwalm-Eder-Kreis.Es hat etwa 15 000 Einwohner und ist eine malerische, fruehmittelalterliche Stadt mit ueber 400 Fachwerkhaeusern aus dem 17. und 18. Jahrhundert.
