The District Council of Sedgemoor, Somerset, England, and that of Schwalm-Eder, Hessen in Germany entered a twinning agreement in 1979. It is believed to be the first in England with a District Council from abroad.
Consequent to the District Twinning, towns within Sedgemoor District established arrangements with counterparts in Schwalm-Eder. Cheddar twin with Felsberg, Burnham and Highbridge twin with Fritzlar, and Bridgwater twin with Homberg/Efze.
The two Districts have much in common, agriculture, logistics, light industry and tourism featuring prominently in the local economy. Local legends from the historic towns within Schwalm-Eder were used by the Brothers Grimm as the basis for many of their world famous childrens stories.
The purpose of the twinning between the Councils is to promote greater understanding between the peoples of the two Districts, with particular emphasis on encouraging exchanges of schoolchildren, on a home-hosting basis, there-by enhancing their linguistic and cultural knowledge. A per-capita grant is available to schools in respect of each participating child to off-set costs.
Thus far, in excess of 2000 children have enjoyed the “international experience”. Currently four of the six comprehensive schools in Sedgemoor are engaged in the exchange programme Cannington College students (being part of the Bridgwater College) have a standing arrangement with an Agricultural College in Schwalm-Eder.
As with the District Twinning, each of the three Town Societies within Sedgemoor have developed their own unique arrangements, involving regular, or on an ad-hoc basis, exchanges between interested groups of local citizens of all ages. For further information please refer to respective web-pages.
